French Secretary of State for tourism Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne announced on Wednesday that because of a steep rise in new COVID-19 cases and intensive care admissions, French ski resorts will not reopen today 7 January 2021 as had been tentatively scheduled.

On Wednesday France saw 25,379 new cases of COVID-19, and 234 patients were admitted to intensive care units of hospitals.

Prime Minister Jean Castex and Health Minister Olivier Véran are scheduled to hold a press conference later today to provide an update on COVID-19 restrictions.

French ski resorts have been closed since early December, while resorts in neighboring Switzerland have been operating.

Mr. Lemoyne said a new reopening date would be announced after a Defense Council meeting next week.
