AAA predicts that 47.7M Americans will travel during 2021 Independence Day weekend (1-5 July) 2021 - down just 2.5% from 2019, and up 40% from 2020.

If that prediction is accurate, 2021 will be the #2 all-time 4 July weekend for travel, trailing only 2019.

Despite the highest gasoline prices in 7 years, 91% are expected to travel by car.

Another 7% are expected to fly, with the balance of trips distributed among bus, rail and newly reopened cruise.

Travelers are expected to include 2.48M New Englanders, 92% of whom will travel by car. That would make this the #1 all-time 4 July travel weekend for New Englanders.

Top destinations based on AAA Travel booking data for 1-5 July will be:

  1. Orlando
  2. Anaheim
  3. Denver
  4. Las Vegas
  5. Seattle
  6. Chicago
  7. NYC
  8. Atlanta
  9. Boston
  10. Kahului

AAA also predicts that the worst time and place to travel around Boston this weekend will be Monday 5 July 3 PM - 5 PM on I95 South between MA Route 10 and Sanford Road.
