Under the proposed "EU Settlement Scheme," EU citizens who have lived in the UK continuously for 5 years or longer would have "settled" status, with same rights as they have now. Close family members would be included.

Those resident in the UK before 31 December 2020 but not meeting the 5-year residency criterion would be placed in "pre-settled" status until resident for 5 years.

Applicants for the Settlement Scheme must prove identity, residency, and that they're not "serious criminals."

Those not already in permanent residency status will have to pay an application fee of 65 GBP (adults) or 32.50 GDP (children).

The Home Office is staffing up to handle the workload.
