These units would be Airbnb's first own-brand accommodations.
Plans are to build one building with hundreds of units near Kissimee.
Apparently the developer, not Airbnb, would own the building and be the landlord.
Intent is to then rent the units to young people working in the area, who can then sublet them as short-term rentals. Airbnb, the real-estate developer and the tenants would share the proceeds from the sublets.
This could start a whole new ballgame in the short-term rental arena.
Upside: these apartments will have to meet health and safety codes.
Downside: sublets will likely undersell local lodging properties.
