With UK population up by 12% in 2016 vs. 1996, Brits took 68% more foreign holidays. And although 7-night stays were most popular in both years, the popularity of 14-night stays was down in 2016 and that of 2-6 night stays up strongly.

Top 10 destinations showed some shifts also: Belgium and Turkey are no longer among the top 10 and preference for France is off a bit.

Emerging destinations like UAE, Poland, Romania, Croatia and Iceland were popular in 2016.

A lot of factors are at work here: currency exchange rates, air access, terrorism, wars, EU membership, infrastructure development.

With all those variables to contend with, tourism marketing is tough
