Anti-tourism campaigns, plunging Turkish lira lead to fewer visits to Spain by Brits and Germans

Trading Economics

Tourist arrivals to Spain in July 2018 were down 4.9% vs. July 2017. Markets of greatest shrinkage were:

  • France (-11.4%)
  • Germany (-8.2%)
  • UK (-5.6%)

Anti-tourist demonstrations and signage in Spain last year are contributing factors, along with a plunging Turkish lira and the recovery of the Tunisian tourist industry.

An article this summer in the national Spanish newspaper El Mundo branded the absent northern European tourists as "traitors."

Moral: Be careful what you wish for - you might get it.
