The Vacationer

A survey conducted on 1 March 2022 by travel website The Vacationer finds that 36% of Americans polled say they feel less safe traveling since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

And 40% say they will reconsider 2022 travel plans:

  • 14.32% said they will reconsider plans for both international and domestic travel
  • 25.18% said they will reconsider plans for international travel only.

When asked what they would be willing to do to reach a travel destination in 2022 considering the very high price of oil and closures of airspaces, respondents said they would be willing to:

  • Pay more (26.46%)
  • Take longer (26.19%)
  • Accept more flight layovers (15.24%)
  • Fly to a different city and drive (14.69%)
  • Find a different mode of travel (19.07%)
  • Postpone trip, hope situation improves (24.36%)
  • None of these (35.22%)

Those aged 18-29 were most likely to say they would be willing to take longer, accept more layovers or fly to a different city and drive.

When asked "After Russia's invasion of Ukraine and remembering the shoot-down of MH17 over Ukraine in 2014, how do you feel about traveling?" responses were:

  • Less safe (35.95%)
  • About the same (61.77%)
  • More safe (2.28%)

Women were 1.5X as likely as men to say they now feel less safe, and people over 60 were also more likely than those of other age groups to say they now feel less safe.

The Vacationer claims a margin of error of +/- 3.026% for their survey, with 95% confidence.
