2022 Deloitte Summer Travel Survey

The 2022 Deloitte Summer Travel Survey released on Tuesday found a pre-pandemic level of travel intentions among Americans for summer 2022, with 46% planning a trip involving an overnight stay in paid lodging.

Personal finances replace COVID-19 as the #1 concern Americans have about traveling this summer. But nearly 3 in 10 survey respondents said they plan to spend more in summer 2022 than they did in summer 2019 - a reality because of higher airfares and room rates this year.

The majority of summer 2022 summer overnight trips will be to domestic destinations: only 15% plan to take an international flight, for reasons including high airfares, unpredictable entry and exit regulations, and the possibility of being stranded abroad after testing positive for COVID-19.

Of those planning domestic trips, 67% say they plan to stay at hotels, 16% at rental units.

Travelers say they plan to take an average of 2 trips this summer, with road trips (cited by 57%) edging out flights (51%).

Findings come from a representative sample of 2,546 American travelers, including 1,960 who said they plan to stay in paid lodging, who were surveyed 23-30 March 2022.
