The Trump administration's initial interpretation of the Supreme Court's ruling letting the travel ban on visitors from Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen stand pending a final ruling was that persons having "bona fide" relationships with US residents were limited to parents, children, spouses, parents-in-law, sons- and daughters-in-law, people engaged to be married and siblings.

Subsequently, Honolulu Federal District Court Judge Derrick Watson ruled that "close family members be defined to include grandparents," and the Supreme Court has permitted that ruling to stand for now.
