Immediate occasion for this seems to be one or more drive-by shootings in St. James Parish.

The region - where Montego Bay is located - has been placed under martial law, and tourists are being warned not to leave their resorts.

UK and Canada travel alerts for Jamaica advise "Exercise a high degree of caution", while US State Department has set DO NOT TRAVEL advisories for parts of Kingston and Montego Bay.
