UK Home Office

The new points-based plan which would go into effect 1 January 2021 is intended to induce businesses to:

  • develop automated technologies to replace "low-skilled" migrants
  • encourage the recruitment of scientists, engineers and academics
  • increase the skill of unemployed and underemployed British-born persons, and their participation in the workforce

Requirements for immigrant workers will include:

  • Ability to speak English
  • Job offer from a "known employer" with a minimum annual salary of 25,600 GBP

Home Secretary Priti Patel called the new policy "a historic moment for the whole country."

The UK hospitality and tourism industry - one of the largest employers of "low-skilled" workers like tour guides, bus drivers, waiters and chambermaids - has vehemently opposed the new plan.

Will there be no 2021 "high season" for UK tourism? Stay tuned for updates.
