The US Department of Homeland Security announced on Friday that US land borders with Canada and Mexico will remain closed to nonessential inbound travel until at least 21 September 2021.

DHS said in a tweet:

“To minimize the spread of #COVID19, including the Delta variant, the United States is extending restrictions on non-essential travel at our land and ferry crossings with Canada and Mexico through September 21, while continuing to ensure the flow of essential trade and travel. In coordination with public health and medical experts, DHS continues working closely with its partners across the United States and internationally to determine how to safely and sustainably resume normal travel.”

Since 9 August, Canada has been allowing fully-vaccinated Americans to enter through its land border.

Although international visitors are permitted to enter the US by air, the Canada and Mexico land borders have been closed to inbound travel by noncitizens since 20 March 2020.

The US Travel Association has complained that the American economy takes a $1.5B hit every month the borders remain closed.
