Airbnb

Airbnb has reported that 541,900 visitors stayed at its Maine properties in 2019, generating $89.2M for hosts, $31.1M in additional in-state spend, and $8M in state lodging tax revenue.

Here are guest numbers and host income by county:

The Airbnb boom is something of a two-edged sword for the state: Airbnb stays create business for nearby restaurants, retailers and other businesses - and bring in lodging tax revenue - but are able to underprice and cut into the business of state-regulated hotels and inns. And short-term rentals reduce the supply of affordable housing for both year-round inhabitants and seasonal employees of tourism and hospitality businesses.

Will there be more regulation of short-term rental properties in Maine as in Massachusetts and elsewhere?

Stay tuned for updates.
