Maine Transportation Commissioner: I95 construction delays 'inevitable' this summer

Two highway construction projects on Interstate Route 95 between Portsmouth, NH and York, ME will be ongoing throughout the 2019 summer tourist season.

In June, Maine DOT will begin a year of work on the Piscataqua River Bridge between Portsmouth, NH and Kittery, ME.

And 9 miles to the north, work on the York Toll Plaza that began last fall will also be continuing through summer 2019.

Around 80% of tourists visiting Maine enter via this stretch of I95.

Maine Transportation Commissioner Bruce van Note has said travel interruptions will be "inevitable" this summer, despite anything Maine DOT can do to keep traffic moving.

Unfortunately, asphalt paving can't be done on frozen ground, in rain/snow, or with the temperature much below 50F. And those conditions don't reliably appear in Maine until June.
