Prof. Deegan's point is that although demand for Ireland as an international tourism destination is growing very fast, supply - of transport infrastructure, accommodation and attractions - will soon become limiting unless addressed right away.

Other destinations with similar problems include Antarctica, Barcelona and Acadia National Park, among others.

Demand exceeding supply is a tough nut to crack for destinations. US National Park Service can reduce demand for Acadia by tripling entrance fees - but that avenue isn't available to the Irish state.
