This planned 180-day moratorium was sparked by a similar one in nearby Southwest Harbor.

The initiative to be voted on would limit numbers of cruise passengers coming ashore in Tremont to fewer than 50.

Large numbers of tourists - who won't be staying or eating locally - suddenly landing at these small towns puts a strain on services, for little benefit to the town aside from perhaps T-shirt sales.
