Distributive and services trades 2nd quarter 2005
 
Turnover of wholesale trades at current prices rose 13.4 per cent to
£112.1 billion in Q2 2005 compared with the same period last year. This
mainly reflected a 41.1 per cent increase in the wholesale turnover
of non-agricultural intermediate products, waste and scrap. Turnover of
wholesale trades, not seasonally adjusted, rose 3.0 per cent compared with
the previous quarter.
 
Turnover of business services rose 9.5 per cent to £47.9 billion in Q2 2005
compared with the same period last year. This mainly reflected a 23.8 per
cent increase in turnover of architectural and engineering activities and
related technical consultancy and a 10.4 per cent increase in turnover of
legal, accounting book-keeping and auditing activities. Turnover of business
trades rose 1.6 per cent compared with the previous quarter.
 
Turnover of transport and postal services rose 3.8 per cent to £35.6 billion in
Q2 2005 compared with the same period last year. The biggest increase was 18.6
per cent in turnover of activities of other transport agencies. The turnover
of the telecommunication industry rose by 3.3 per cent. Turnover of transport
and postal services rose 5.4 per cent compared with the previous quarter.
 
Turnover of the hotel and restaurant sector rose 5.9 per cent to £17.5
billion in Q2 2005 compared with the same period last year. This mainly
reflected a 7.6 per cent increase in turnover of restaurants and an 11.1 per
cent increase in turnover of hotels. There was only a small increase in the
turnover of bars. Turnover of the hotel and restaurant sector rose 14.2 per
cent compared with the previous quarter.
 
Turnover of motor trades rose 1.5 per cent to £39.0 billion in Q2 2005 compared
with the same period last year. This mainly reflected a 6.7 per cent increase
in turnover at current prices in the retail sale of automotive fuel and a
0.7 per cent increase in turnover in the sale of motor vehicles. Turnover
of motor trades fell 0.1 per cent compared with the previous quarter.
