London, 29 September/GNN/ -- NATIONAL STATISTICS News Release (dst) issued by the Government News Networkon 29 September 2005Coverage Great Britain Theme Commerce, Energy and Industry Distributive and services trades 2nd quarter 2005 Turnover of wholesale trades at current prices rose 13.4 per cent to£112.1 billion in Q2 2005 compared with the same period last year. Thismainly reflected a 41.1 per cent increase in the wholesale turnoverof non-agricultural intermediate products, waste and scrap. Turnover ofwholesale trades, not seasonally adjusted, rose 3.0 per cent compared withthe previous quarter. Turnover of business services rose 9.5 per cent to £47.9 billion in Q2 2005compared with the same period last year. This mainly reflected a 23.8 percent increase in turnover of architectural and engineering activities andrelated technical consultancy and a 10.4 per cent increase in turnover oflegal, accounting book-keeping and auditing activities. Turnover of businesstrades rose 1.6 per cent compared with the previous quarter. Turnover of transport and postal services rose 3.8 per cent to £35.6 billion inQ2 2005 compared with the same period last year. The biggest increase was 18.6per cent in turnover of activities of other transport agencies. The turnoverof the telecommunication industry rose by 3.3 per cent. Turnover of transportand postal services rose 5.4 per cent compared with the previous quarter. Turnover of the hotel and restaurant sector rose 5.9 per cent to £17.5billion in Q2 2005 compared with the same period last year. This mainlyreflected a 7.6 per cent increase in turnover of restaurants and an 11.1 percent increase in turnover of hotels. There was only a small increase in theturnover of bars. Turnover of the hotel and restaurant sector rose 14.2 percent compared with the previous quarter. Turnover of motor trades rose 1.5 per cent to £39.0 billion in Q2 2005 comparedwith the same period last year. This mainly reflected a 6.7 per cent increasein turnover at current prices in the retail sale of automotive fuel and a0.7 per cent increase in turnover in the sale of motor vehicles.
