NH House Bill would permit municipal room taxes up to $2/night

New Hampshire Legislature

House Bill 641 would permit towns to enact a local tax of up to $2/night (on top of the State's 9% lodging tax) on rooms priced at $40 or more a night, to be used to pay tourism costs.

Currently 28% of the State's lodging tax revenue is passed to the towns, but individual towns' shares are based on year-round population, so small towns with a lot of seasonal tourist visits get relatively little of that pot.

Opponents believe the additional tax will put NH at a competitive disadvantage with the other New England states.

Stay tuned.
