Jeju residents fear adding second airport will make overtourism worse not better

Jeju Korea Provincial Government

The Self-Governing Province of Jeju - a volcanic island off the southern tip of the South Korean mainland - is a popular tourist destination because of its beach resorts and volcanic landscape.

When the capacity of Jeju International Airport became strained, the provincial government proposed to build a second airport to handle arrivals expected to reach 45M annually by 2035.

But residents fear that an even greater influx of tourists will harm their unique local culture and the fragile environment of the island.

A committee has been empaneled to reassess the feasibility of the 2nd airport, with 7 anti-airport members and 7 from the provincial government, the outcome to be decided by two-thirds majority vote.

Two-thirds majority vote in a committee of 14 people, 50% government employees? I seriously wish them luck, as they will need it.
